Vegetables are a vital part of our food to fulfill the needs of various vitamins and minerals in our body. These are fundamental for those who are vegetarian and cannot eat meat and other non vegetarian food items. There are some vegetarian people who don’t even consume milk products.

If a person will eat vegetables in great quantities there is rarely any side effect of it. However, consuming non vegetarian food in excess can be harmful for a person. Everyday researches are done and new studies have proved that vegetarian people can live a longer and healthy life as non vegetarians can suffer from health hazards like heart diseases, cardio logical problems, obesity, etc. Vegetables eaten in the form of salads help improve the digestion and cure digestion problems. Many vegetables can be grown without much effort in your kitchen garden. Thus, you will be able to relish the fresh veggies from your garden. When you buy vegetables from the market, these can have insecticides and pesticides sprayed on them but those from your kitchen garden will not have such chemicals. You can grow them as per your choice without any chemical fertilizers and pesticides. You can also take care of the quality of these plants. The seeds can be bought from the market or you can order them online. It would be better to purchase the plant if you are busy with your work. You can have the option of buying the small sized plants of vegetables from a nearby nursery or you can order plants online. Here is the list of common vegetable plants that you can plant in your home garden.

Spinach

The dark green leaves of spinach are said to be the rich source of iron. This green leafy vegetable is used to cook mouth-watering food items like palak paneer, palak pakoda, etc.

You should sow its seeds by giving some space between them. These should be grown in somewhat big pots.

Cabbage

This vegetable is also formed with various layers of leaves in spear shape. The innermost part of cabbage can be used to plant it in the water. This green veggie is also full of nutrients.

Mustard

It is a most common vegetable in Punjab as people of Punjab make a dish out of it which is named as Mustard mash. Most of the time in the winter season, they cook this food item because they find it very appetizing as well as healthy. Seeds of Mustard are also used to make Mustard oil to be used for cooking. They also apply this oil on hair and skin.

People who grow Mustard at home also take out the oil from its seeds. Thus, by growing Mustard at home they can make their own Mustard oil without any adulteration. The dishes made of mustard oil are also delicious and can be good for your health.

Cauliflower

As its name suggests, it looks like a big off white flower. You can buy its seed from the local market or shop which sells seeds. One can also purchase the seeds from online nurseries. This plant likes moist soil, so you should regularly water it. There should be space between seeds and there should not be any overlapping of seeds while sowing them.

Garlic

Garlic can be grown in water but if planted in soil it does not like moist soil. Its soil should be such that drains water easily which means it should not be clay soil. This plant is grown using the cloves of garlic, therefore fresh cloves should be chosen without any chemical sprayed on them.

Onion

This is also a cold weather crop and it is used in almost all dishes. People also love to eat them in salad especially when vinegar is added.

For growing onion, you should cut it in two pieces and the part with a round white centre is used to first prepare this cutting in water and then plant them in soil. You can get green onions if you grow them only in water. The green onions are less bitter than basic pink or purple onions.

Redish

Two types of radishes are most common which are white radish and red radish to grow in winters. For radish as well, you should sow seeds by giving some space and there should be well drained soil. Although, soil should not be clay soil yet it does not mean the plant does not like water. It should be watered regularly.

Mint

You can grow mint with its seeds or its cutting. It is comparatively easy to grow this plant with cutting. This plant likes moist soil but you should not overwater it. The plant of mint can spread areas where it should not so you should better grow this plant in a container. There are many varieties of mint plant which are used to flavor dishes. Chocolate mint, apple mint, spearmint, lemon mint, peppermint and sweet mint are various species of mint plant.

Small plants of herbs and vegetables are available online on various online nurseries and you can do the online shopping for indoor plants which you can have in your house during winter season. Carrot, capsicum, broccoli, fenugreek and turnip are some other plants which you can grow in the winter season. You should mix some natural fertilizers in the soil of these plants with one third of vermicompost or cow dung.

You do not have to purchase these vegetables from the market and with this you can save your money.
